On Thursday June 17th our Club night looked a little different as 10 intrepid Hotfooters gathered in the Hay pay-and-display car park in their swimwear with their bikes (or borrowed bikes) lined up against the fence in ‘transition’. This was the start of the first Hay Hotfooters Have-a-Go Triathlon and with the sun shining nerves were running high. Lots of other club members had turned up to help marshall the event and encourage the competitors on their way.
The swim took place in Hay on Wye Primary School’s pool and the whistle blew for the first 5 competitors at 6.45. Everyone managed their 10 lengths (mostly swimming) and then they rushed out to jump on their bikes and set out on the 5 mile ride to Clifford and back. Meanwhile the second wave of swimmers were thrashing up and down the pool. As the cyclists returned they discovered just how hard it is to jump of a bike and start running – especially uphill. Undaunted they set out on the 3 mile run that took them on a long slow climb up to St Mary’s Church in Cusop before returning across the fields to the Car Park.
Everyone was then rewarded with a baked potato and chilli at Tim and Emma’s house.
Congratulations to all 10 of the triathletes who threw themselves into it with such enthusiasm and all completed the course. Special mention to Carl (overall winner), Jo (fastest lady) and Ashley who contacted me at 5.00pm offering to marshall and found himself taking part instead.
We hope that this will become an annual event and that even more club members will feel tempted to take part next year.
